The service

What a roof survey or inspection gives you

A roof inspection is a close look at the condition of your roof: tiles, ridges, flashing, chimney, gutters and anything else at height, so you know what needs doing, what can wait and what is fine.

You get photos and a detailed report recommending the action to take. That means you can see the problem for yourself rather than taking someone's word for it.

It is for homeowners buying or selling, landlords, businesses and councils, and anyone who has spotted a problem and wants it properly diagnosed before committing to repair costs.

Inspections cover more than roofs: anything at height that needs inspecting can be looked at from the platform.

If it's left

The cost of guessing

Without a proper inspection, repairs are guesswork. You might pay to fix the wrong thing while the real cause keeps leaking.

Small faults found early are cheap to fix. Found late, they've usually caused damage to battens, insulation and ceilings.

Inspections from the ground or from drone photos alone can miss details that are obvious when you're beside the roof.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a property without knowing the condition of the roof.
  • Paying for a repair without photos of the problem.
  • Walking on a roof to inspect it and causing damage.
  • Waiting for a leak before having the roof looked at.

Beyond roofs

Anything at height that needs inspecting can be covered.

In detail

Roof surveys and inspections in detail

What is checked depends on the building and the reason for the inspection.

Roof coverings

Tiles and slates are checked for cracks, slips and missing units; ridges and hips for loose bedding.

Chimneys and flashing

Pointing, pots, flaunching and lead flashing are all common leak points and are looked at closely.

Gutters and roofline

Gutters, fascias and soffits are checked for blockages, damage and rot.

Other high-level structures

Anything else at height that needs inspecting can be reached from the 18m platform.

Charges

Site visits just to look at a job are free. If the machine is needed for a closer inspection, the minimum hire charge applies.

Why close access gives a better inspection

Many roof problems simply can't be seen properly from the ground. Hairline cracks in tiles, split lead, eroded mortar on ridges and gaps in flashing are small details that only show up at close range. Photographs taken from a distance can hint at a problem but rarely confirm it.

From the platform, the roof is seen up close, from the eaves to the ridge and around the chimney. That means the report is based on what is actually there, not on what might be there.

Why photos matter

Roofs are out of sight, which makes it hard to judge what you're being told about them. Photos in the report show you exactly what was found and where. That makes it easier to decide what to fix now, what can wait and what is in good order, and it gives you a record of the roof's condition.

When to book an inspection

Common reasons include buying or selling a property, taking on a rental, noticing damp or a stain inside, after a storm, or simply wanting to know the condition of an older roof before problems start. Businesses and councils book inspections to plan maintenance on their buildings.

From report to repair

The report recommends the action to take. If repair work is needed, roof repairs and maintenance are the main service, so the same person who inspected the roof can quote for and carry out the work. Repair work carries a 5-year guarantee and full installations a 10-year guarantee, covering material failure or improper installation, but not damage from lack of care or extreme weather.

Inspecting other high-level structures

Inspections aren't limited to roofs. Anything at height that needs inspecting, such as chimneys, gutters, fascias, high walls and other parts of a building, can be looked at from the 18m platform. The machine compacts to 780mm wide to reach the back of properties through narrow gates, provided ground conditions are suitable.

What the report helps you decide

A good inspection report sorts findings into what needs doing now, what should be watched and what is in good condition. That stops you paying for work that isn't needed, and it helps you plan and budget for work that will be needed later. For landlords and businesses, it also gives a dated record of the roof's condition.

Inspection charges explained

A site visit just to look at a job from the ground is free. When the machine is needed to get up close to the roof or structure, the minimum hire charge applies, because the machine has to be brought to site, assessed and set up. Get in touch for a quote and to discuss what you need inspected.

Asking for an inspection

When you get in touch, explain why you'd like the inspection: buying a property, a leak, storm damage or routine maintenance, and which parts of the building you're concerned about. That helps focus the inspection on what matters to you. Mention how the machine would reach the area, such as gate widths or access across a driveway.
