The service
Gutter cleaning, repairs and replacement explained
Gutters and downpipes carry every drop of rain that lands on your roof away from the building. When they block, leak or sag, that water pours down walls, soaks into brickwork and pools around foundations.
The work covers three levels, depending on what the gutter run actually needs: cleaning out leaves, moss and silt; repairing leaking joints, broken brackets and misaligned sections; and replacing gutters that are cracked, brittle or beyond economical repair.
It is for homeowners, landlords and businesses, particularly properties with high eaves, conservatories underneath, or gardens that are difficult to reach with ladders.
Signs you need it: water spilling over the edge in heavy rain, drips from joints, plants growing out of the gutter, staining on the brickwork below, or a run that visibly dips in the middle.
If it's left
What blocked or broken gutters cost you
Overflowing water runs down the face of the wall. Brickwork stays wet, mortar erodes, and damp can come through to inside walls. In winter, saturated brick suffers frost damage.
Water dumped at the base of a wall can affect foundations and paths, and splashback stains render and paintwork. Wet fascia boards rot from behind the gutter.
Uncleared gutters also get heavy. The extra weight pulls brackets loose and makes the run sag, which is why regular cleaning matters, damage caused by gutters not being cleaned is not covered by any guarantee.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving gutter cleaning until there's a visible overflow.
- Leaning ladders on plastic gutters, which cracks them.
- Resealing one joint while ignoring the bracket that has made the run sag.
- Replacing a whole run when a repair would do, or patching a run that needs replacing.
- Forgetting the downpipes, which block just as often.

In detail
Gutter work in detail
Gutters look simple, but most failures come down to a handful of specific causes.
Gutter cleaning
Leaves, moss washed off the roof and silt build up in gutters and outlets. Cleaning removes the build-up by hand from the platform and checks that downpipes are running clear.
Leaking joints and outlets
Plastic gutter joints rely on rubber seals that perish over time. Replacing the union or outlet usually stops the drip without replacing the gutter.
Brackets and falls
A gutter has to fall slightly towards its outlet. Broken or loose brackets cause dips where water sits. Refixing brackets restores the fall.
Gutter replacement
When a run is brittle, cracked in several places or an old profile that no longer seals, replacing it is the better value. Full replacements are treated as installations and carry a 10-year guarantee.
Residential and commercial
On houses, gutter jobs are usually quick visits. On commercial buildings, long runs and higher eaves are where the 18m platform is most useful.
Downpipes and outlets
A gutter can be perfectly clean and still overflow if the outlet or downpipe below it is blocked. Leaves, moss and debris collect at bends and at the foot of the pipe. Checking that water actually runs through the outlets is part of every gutter visit, because a cleaned gutter that still can't drain hasn't solved anything.
Why height and access make gutters awkward
Gutters sit at the very edge of the roof, which makes them one of the most awkward parts of a building to reach safely. Ladders have to lean against the gutter or the wall beside it, and on two- and three-storey properties, or above conservatories and extensions, there is often nowhere safe to put one at all. The tracked cherry picker solves that by putting a guarded platform alongside the gutter run, so the whole length can be worked along without moving ladders every few metres.
The machine compacts to 780mm wide, so rear elevations reachable only through a garden gate or side passage are usually within reach. Ground conditions need to be suitable, and every job is assessed before setting up.
Gutters and the rest of the roofline
Gutter faults often sit alongside other roofline issues: moss washing down from the roof, slipped tiles at the eaves, or tired paintwork on fascias. Because roof repairs, roof cleaning and high-level painting are all carried out from the same platform, related work can be quoted together and done in a single visit, which saves a second set-up.
Looking after gutters between visits
The single most useful thing you can do is keep an eye on your gutters during heavy rain. Water spilling over the front edge, dripping from a joint or bubbling out at the top of a downpipe tells you where the problem is before it causes damage. Make a note of where it happens and mention it when you call, it helps price the job accurately.

Questions
Gutter cleaning, repairs & replacement: frequently asked questions
How much does gutter cleaning or repair cost?
It depends on the length of the run, the height and what needs doing. Quotes are free, get in touch with a rough description.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least once a year, more often if you have trees nearby. Regular cleaning matters: damage caused by uncleaned gutters (such as excess weight) isn't covered by the guarantee.
Do you guarantee gutter work?
Repairs carry a 5-year guarantee and full replacements a 10-year guarantee, covering material failure or improper installation. Cleaning is not covered, and nor is damage from lack of care or extreme weather.
Can you reach gutters above a conservatory?
Usually, yes. The platform reaches over obstacles that make ladder access unsafe, provided ground conditions are suitable.
Should I repair or replace my gutters?
If the run is generally sound, a repair is usually the better value. If it is brittle or failing in several places, replacement is. You'll be told which, and why.
How long does it take?
Most gutter cleaning and repair jobs are completed in a single visit.
Do you work weekends?
Yes, weekend jobs are taken. You can call anytime and Dennis answers whenever his phone is on.
Which areas do you cover?
Newark and up to 40–50 miles around, including Nottingham, Lincoln, Grantham, Mansfield, Retford, Leicester, Oakham and Stamford.
Can you clean and repair the gutters in one visit?
Yes. If a fault is found while cleaning, it can usually be repaired at the same time, or quoted for if parts are needed.
Why do my gutters overflow even after cleaning?
It is often a blocked downpipe or outlet, a dip in the run from a broken bracket, or a gutter too small for the roof area. Checking the outlets and falls finds which.
